Can I set Gmail (Google Apps) for my domain?

Yes, you can.  To do so, you will need to customize your DNS zone file to route your domain emails to the Gmail servers.

Step 1: Signup for a Google Apps account

Google Apps allows you to setup Gmail for your domain. Mail for your domain is hosted by Gmail and your DNS zone file is customized to route email for your domain to the Gmail servers.

The beauty of the Google Apps/Gmail service is that it’s a great email platform and it’s free for individual users.

You can signup for a Google Apps account here: http://www.google.com/enterprise/apps/business/

Step 2: Google Apps Verification – CNAME Entry

To verify that you do have access to the domain, Google Apps requires you to either create a CNAME entry or upload a temporary file to your FTP server.  If you have chosen to create a CNAME entry:

1. Login to your Member Zone and click on the “DNS Panel (for Advanced User)” link.

2. On the DNS panel page, click on the “Add” button under the Change A and CNAME Records section.

3. Enter the CNAME as per Google’s instructions.

For example, if they have asked for the CNAME for googleffffffffa5c95748 to be created, you will enter the information:

4. When you are ready, click on the “Submit” button.

Step 3: MX Records

1. On the DNS panel page, delete all existing MX Records using the “Delete” link in the Change MX Records section.

2. Click on the “Add” button.

3. Add the new MX settings as per Google’s instructions.

4. When you are ready, click on the “Submit” button.

5. You will only be able to add 5 entries at a time. You may need to repeat steps 2-3 to add all entries as required by Google Apps.

Step 4: CNAME Records

1. On the DNS panel page, click on the “Add” button under the Change A and CNAME Records section.

2. Enter the CNAME entries as per Google’s instructions.

3. When you are ready, click on the “Submit” button.

*Note: all DNS zone file changes require up to 24 hours to take effect.
