Why can’t I register a recently expired domain name?

Although a domain may have expired, it is not immediately available for registration by the general public.

Depending on the registry, the domain name may be kept on hold in a renewal grace period for several weeks. It is only after the renewal grace period that the domain name will be released to the general public.
