What is a Content Management System?

Content management systems and applications differ from website builders like Microsoft Expression Web or Adobe Dreamweaver.  A content management system allows non-technical users to make changes to an existing website with little to no training or experience.  However, these systems consist of scripts that need to be uploaded to your web hosting account first before you can use its content management functions. These scripts are usually written in PHP, ASP, CGI/Perl, etc.

Popular content management systems and applications include:

•    Blog - WordPress
•    CMS - Joomla
•    Shopping Cart – ZenCart, osCommerce
•    Forum – phpBB
