What is a Content Management System?

Content management systems and applications differ from website builders like Microsoft FrontPage or Adobe Dreamweaver. Like the WYSIWYG software, a content management system and application allow non-technical users to make changes to an existing website with little or no training or experience. However, content management systems consist of scripts that need to be uploaded to your web hosting account. These scripts can be written in PHP, ASP, CGI/Perl, etc.

Popular content management systems and applications include:

•    Blog - WordPress
•    CMS - Joomla
•    Shopping Cart – ZenCart, osCommerce
•    Forum – phpBB
